This report sets out the results of the Ngāti Awa Group Holdings Limited (NAGHL) and Ngāti Awa Assets Holdings Limited (NAAHL) for the 2008-2009 financial year. As with last year, these results have been achieved at a time when the world economy continues to suffer from the worst recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s. this downturn has flowed through to the value of our assets, especially our equities (investments in the stock market) and property valuations. The turbulent market conditions have also had a negative flow-on effect into commodity prices as illustrated by the reduction in value of our farming and forestry assets.
However, on a positive note we have continued to develop strong relationships with our Ngāti Awa trusts. A highlight early in the year was the economic summit hosted by Ngāti Awa Group Holdings Ltd in Tauranga, which coincided with the Te Matatini Kapa Haka festival. Held over two days, the event brought together many of the economic powerhouses of Māoritanga, along with the Minister of Finance Bill English to share ideas and common vision, learn from each other's experiences and outline collective investment opportunities for the future.
This successful collaboration bodes well for the future, in terms of utilising larger economies of scale, and for the ability of Ngāti Awa Group Holdings Ltd to provide and facilitate economic growth opportunities for other Ngāti Awa entities.
A further highlight of the year was the Board's decision to develop a bonds portfoltio to provide certainty of cash flow to meet the operational requirements of the Rūnanga.
