Change occurs everywhere in our villages and townships, on the land, in our rivers, in the ocean and even in the air.
Peaceful sharing of space, place and resources can be challenged when people propose changes that adversely affect others and the environment they share.
Changes that affect the original inhabitants of an area can be even more challenging especially when there is potential for that change to create outcomes the original people dislike or feel they have no control over.
Tackling diverse opinions about change adds to the challenge.
In Environment Ngāti Awa we know that working with our uri and hapu is vital if change within our rohe is to be met with determination and clarity.
In Environment Ngāti Awa we foster a team approach in which uri, hapu, pukenga and the Runanga work together to assess proposals for change, then act together to ensure our place, resources, relationships and heritage endure for future generations.
Promotion and implementation of mauri enhancement projects and the active exercise of kaitiakitanga are key functions for all of us. Knowing how each of us can lend our strengths, skills and energy to achieve positive environmental outcomes, on a tight budget, is a challenge we must face together.
So far we are doing well - but there will always be much for us to do as kaitiaki.
Your team at Environment Ngati Awa is there to assist you in the active exercise of kaitiakitanga in our Ngati Awa rohe. Bev Hughes, John Hohapata-Oke and Monica Maniapoto are available by appointment to work with you on your kaitiakitanga projects.
